New Grief Support Cooperative Expands Services
Genesis is expanding its grief support services to include all patients and their loved ones. This new cooperative is supported by a $50,000 grant from Genesis Philanthropy.
“The Genesis Grief Support Cooperative will fill a gap in the local community with targeted, comprehensive services,” said Jon Yarian, coordinator with Genesis Grief Support. “These services not only address the physical and psychosocial health needs of grieving people, but greatly enhance their ability to heal from the mental, spiritual and emotional manifestations of their grief.”
The Grief Support Cooperative opened Monday and is located at 1351 W. Central Park, Pavilion 1, Suite 460 at Genesis Medical Center, West Campus in Davenport. The new cooperative includes the addition of a mental health counselor with a specialization in end of life and post death grief.
Genesis Grief Support will provide care to people experiencing:
- Bereavement (death of a loved one)
- Terminal diagnosis
- Job loss
- Divorce/separation/loss of a special relationship
- Alzheimer’s/dementia in a loved one
- Loss of health
- Home loss
- Perinatal loss (miscarriage, stillbirth, etc.)
- And any non-specific grief
The Grief Support Cooperative will provide patients with 13 months of services, which include grief education course, group counseling and individual counseling, and life-time access to online resources and support.
“Grief does not have a timeline,” said Kate Bowman, mental health counselor. “Each person may require a different level of support or frequency of support. We try to accommodate everyone’s individual needs in providing the type of care and support that will help them the most.”
By creating the cooperative, Genesis extends its care to include the entire Quad City region and surrounding communities.
“This education and support for the grieving helps them normalize their own reaction, and learn how to return to health in the face of their grief,” Yarian said.
Individuals suffering from grief associated with a significant loss in their life are encouraged to schedule an individual support appointment with grief specialists at www.genesishealth.com/grief or by calling the Grief Support Helpline at (563) 421-5000.
